Dear Parents/Guardians and Students:

As a midyear reminder, NYCDOE has Mobile Scanning Units that randomly select schools to be scanned. This program enables school safety officers to travel unannounced to schools across the city on any given day to scan for electronic devices and weapons.  This is a NYCDOE initiative to keep all city schools and students safe.

If we are selected to be scanned for the day, our students would be asked to go through metal scanning machines similar to the ones used to screen airline passengers. All electronic devices (ipods, cell phones, etc.) will be confiscated and returned to students at a later time. All students will be scanned in order to enter the building that day.

Please be reminded that Chancellor’s Regulation, A-412 prohibits all electronic devices in NYC Public Schools. Students have been advised and reminded of the Chancellor’s policy and we ask for your full cooperation in this matter.

FACT:  In the City of New York engine idling causes as much pollution as nine million large trucks driving from the Bronx to Staten Island. When your vehicle idles, the exhaust pollutes the air inside the vehicle and the air around the vehicle.

Your vehicle idles when the engine is on but isn’t going anywhere. Reducing idling makes the air cleaner for your kids, especially those travelling to and from schools.

 FACT: New York City has one of the highest asthma rates among children in the country. Children breathe 50% more air per pound than adults. Children’s asthma symptoms increase as a result of vehicle exhaust.

 FACT: Idling for longer than 10 seconds wastes more fuel than restarting your engine. In fact, over $28 mil- lion in gas is wasted by NYC idlers each year.

 DON’T  BREAK  THE  LAW!   Curb- side idling is illegal–even if you’re sitting in your vehicle, you can get a ticket for idling your engine. Turn off your engine to save gas and money, and most important your health.

The law now limits vehicle idling to no more than ONE minute adjacent to a school–public or private. City officials are authorized to enforce the anti-idling law by issuing fines of $300 or more for violation of the anti-idling law.
